When the city streets get too warm, locals love to escape to the ocean. My absolute favorite summer getaway is Gangneung, a beautiful coastal city on the east coast of Korea. It takes about three hours to drive there from Seoul, making it the perfect distance for a refreshing road trip.
Gangneung holds a very special place in my heart. In South Korea, all healthy adult men have a mandatory duty to serve in the military to protect the country. My husband actually spent two years completing his military service right here in Gangneung. Because of this special connection, our family has made it a tradition to travel to Gangneung at least once every two years. Visiting the city always feels nostalgic and deeply meaningful for us.
On my recent summer vacation, I decided to look past the usual crowded tourist spots. Instead, I explored hidden local beaches, relaxing pine forests, and amazing indoor digital art hubs.

When most international travelers think of Gangneung, Gyeongpo Beach is usually the first name that comes to mind. While Gyeongpo is undeniably beautiful, it can get incredibly crowded during the peak summer season.
If you want to experience the true charm of Gangneung like a local, you need to know which beach fits your specific vibe. Here are four distinct coastal spots I visited and highly recommend, each offering a unique seaside experience.
1. Songjeong Beach: The Ultimate Family-Friendly Retreat
If you are traveling with family and want to avoid the chaotic crowds of Gyeongpo, Songjeong Beach (송정해수욕장) is your best alternative.
- The Vibe: Exceptionally peaceful and serene, lined with a beautiful, lush pine tree forest that offers soothing shade.
- Why Locals Love It: Unlike its busier neighbors, Songjeong boasts a spacious and easily accessible parking lot, making it incredibly convenient for family trips. It’s the perfect, stress-free spot to pitch a small tent, let the kids play in the sand, and genuinely listen to the sound of the waves.
2. Namhangjin Beach: A Hidden Spot for Adults and Campers
Namhangjin Beach (남항진해수욕장) is a true insider secret. Located near a military base, this area was restricted and undeveloped as a commercial public beach for a long time. Only recently has it opened up, transforming into a pristine, quiet coastal getaway known mostly to locals.
- The Vibe: Untouched, deep sea, and quiet.
- Best For: Adult swimmers and campers. The waves here tend to be stronger and the water gets deep quite quickly, so it’s better suited for adults looking for a peaceful swim rather than young children.
- Thanks to its excellent parking layout right by the coast, Namhangjin has become a hotspot for Chabak (car camping) and SUV enthusiasts. If you want to wake up right next to an uncrowded ocean view, this is the place.
3. Anmok Beach: The Heart of Korea’s Specialty Coffee Culture
For the ultimate cafe-hopping experience by the ocean, head straight to Anmok Beach (안목해변). This is the birthplace of the famous Gangneung Coffee Street. Interestingly, it originally started in the 1980s as a popular street lined with coffee vending machines. Since the early 2000s, master baristas began settling here, cementing it as the capital of Korean coffee culture.

Gangmun Beach (강문해변) offers a wonderful mix of traditional fishing village charm and thrilling ocean activities. Situated right next to Gangmun Port, a small and cozy harbor, it is the ultimate destination if you want to pair your beach day with fresh culinary experiences.
- The Vibe: Active, scenic, and authentic.
- Fresh Seafood: Because of the active port, the surrounding restaurants serve incredibly fresh sashimi caught early in the morning.
- Underwater Activities: Gangmun is highly celebrated among scuba diving and skin scuba enthusiasts. Just a 5 to 10-minute boat ride from the shore reveals stunning underwater landscapes (known locally as Jjam or natural underwater rock reefs) teeming with sea anemones and large native fish species. It’s even a popular destination for adventurous couples and newlyweds seeking an unforgettable underwater diving experience.
Part 2. Cooling Off with Digital Art & Technology
After spending time under the sun, it is great to cool off indoors especially with kids. Gangneung offers some incredible indoor spaces where nature meets high technology. Here are two tech-driven spots you should not miss.
1. Arte Museum Gangneung: A Feast for the Senses
If you want to experience cutting-edge digital art, Arte Museum (아르떼뮤지엄) is a must-visit. Created by a famous Korean digital design company, Arte Museum is a premier immersive media art exhibition found in key scenic cities across Korea, including Jeju, Yeosu, Gangneung, and Busan.
- The Theme: The Gangneung location focuses on the theme of “Valley.” It beautifully reflects the unique regional geography and emotional spirit of Gangneung using stunning light, powerful sound, and even delicate scents. It is designed to let visitors truly feel the essence of the city.
- The Experience: Inside, you will be completely immersed in giant media art installations. You can witness massive waves that look incredibly real, grand waterfalls cascading right before your eyes, and the beautiful transition of Gangneung’s four seasons. The scale of the artwork makes you feel like you are walking inside a dream, making it a captivating experience for both adults and children.
- If you are traveling with children, they will absolutely love the special exhibition called “dara”, featuring giant, glowing moon rabbits (Dal-tokki). This magical exhibition is scheduled to run until September 2026, making it the perfect addition to your summer itinerary.
- While the exhibition is incredible for kids, please note that the museum rooms can be very dark, and the sensory displays feature loud sounds and powerful moving visuals. If you are visiting with very young infants or toddlers (especially those under 24 months), they might find the intense sensory environment a bit overwhelming. It is a good idea to hold them close or be prepared to take a quick break if they get startled!

2. Gangneung Metaverse Experience Center: Where Technology Meets Winter Sports
Located right next to the beautiful Gyeongpo Lake, the Gangneung Metaverse Experience Center (강릉 메타버스 체험관) is an amazing space where virtual reality and the real world come together. It is packed with fun attractions that combine cutting-edge technology with exciting activities.
The center spans from the 1st to the 3rd floor. A great local tip is to start your tour from the 3rd floor and work your way down!
- 3rd Floor (AI & Robotics): This floor is all about smart technology. You can interact with advanced AI robots, challenge a robot to a game of Omok (a traditional Korean board game), and even have a robotic arm sketch your portrait right after taking your photo!
- 2nd Floor (AI Virtual Character Studio): A paradise for kids and photo lovers. Using special cameras, the screen turns your face into a fun virtual character in real-time. There are also active games where kids have to jump and run to avoid virtual laser lines, making it great for burning off some energy.
- 1st Floor (Virtual Winter Sports): While the official host of the 2018 Winter Olympics was Pyeongchang, Gangneung was the proud co-host city that staged all the exciting ice sports. On the first floor, you can virtually experience these thrilling winter games through high-tech simulators. You can try bobsledding or compete in a fast-paced speed skating race!
- Many of the active simulators on the 1st floor have height restrictions for safety. It is a good idea to check the height limits at each ride before lining up with your little ones.

Finding the Perfect Balance in Gangneung
Visiting Gangneung at least once every two years has become a precious tradition for my family, but this summer trip was exceptionally special.
By skipping the usual crowded spots, we found the perfect summer balance. We spent our mornings healing in the quiet pine forests of Songjeong Beach, enjoying the rugged local vibes of Namhangjin, sipping specialty brews at Anmok, and exploring the lively shores of Gangmun. In the afternoons, we escaped the summer heat by stepping into the magical digital worlds of Arte Museum and the Metaverse Experience Center.
