The Elegance of Seollal in Korea: Embracing Korean Traditions with Style and Sweetness

2월 23, 2026

The Seollal In Korea is a Season of Rosy Cheeks and Silk Hanboks

The recent Seollal (Lunar New Year) was a reminder of why I love my heritage. Seeing my children dressed in their silk Hanboks, with the delicate colors reflecting the winter sunlight, felt like watching a tradition come to life. In a fast-paced city like Seoul, these moments of “slow tradition” are what I cherish most especially as a mother.

The Main Event: A Bowl of Wisdom, Tteokguk

Seollal isn’t complete without a warm bowl of Tteokguk (Sliced Rice Cake Soup). The clear broth and the white, coin-shaped rice cakes represent a bright, clean start to the year and a wish for prosperity. My kids love the chewy texture, and I love the beautiful Korean sentiment that you “gain a year of wisdom” with every bowl. It also can be beautifully decorated with the pieces of eggs and chopped beef.

Beyond the Meal: The Art of K-Dessert, Jeong-gwa

If Tteokguk is the soul of the meal, Jeong-gwa (Traditional Honey-preserved Fruits or Roots) is the artistic finale. These jewel-like treats, made by simmering fruits or lotus roots in honey and ginger, are the epitome of patience and refinement. It’s a taste that is sweet but deep, much like the culture itself.

My Personal Recommendation for K-Dessert: Gangjeong in Cheongdam (강정이 넘치는 집)

While Seoul is brimming with trendy fusion cafes, I find myself returning to places that honor the “original.” Gangjeong in Cheongdam is a sanctuary for those who appreciate the true, unadulterated flavors of Korean tradition.

Rather than leaning into modern “twists” like chocolate or heavy creams, this place focuses on the purity of ingredients. It’s a “Young Korean Traditional Confectionery Lab” where young artisans (called Chung-nyeon-tteok-bang-chi-gi) keep the authentic methods alive in the heart of the city’s most sophisticated district.

Why It’s Special: Honesty in Every Bite

The first thing you’ll notice when you enter is the aromatic scent of roasted nuts and grain syrup. What I love most about this spot is their “No Sugar, No Preservatives” philosophy.

  • They use high-quality local ingredients like nuts, seeds, and traditional grain syrup (Jocheong).
  • The sweetness is never too much. It’s subtle and the kind of “clean” dessert you feel good about giving to your children.

For the Little Ones & Parents: A True Korean Experience

  • What makes this place even more special for families is its thoughtful layout. The interior is divided into standard seating (tables and chairs) and traditional floor seating (Jwasik).
  • The Authentic Floor Seating: I highly recommend the floor seating area for a truly immersive Korean experience. It’s the perfect spot to teach your children the traditional way of sitting and dining. For parents with younger children, this space offers a much-needed comfort where you can relax without the constraints of a high chair.

  • Healthy Snacks: Their signature Gangjeong (crispy rice or nut puffs) is made fresh without sugar or preservatives. My kids love the crunchy texture, and I love that it’s a healthy alternative to processed snacks.

Insider Tip:

“If you visit, you must try their Ginger Walnut Jeong-gwa. The balance between the slight bitterness of the walnut and the warm sweetness of the ginger syrup is exquisite. It also makes for a perfect, sophisticated gift for friends or family visiting from abroad because the packaging is as elegant as the taste!”
