7 Essential Stops in COEX: From K-Beauty to Iconic Landmarks

4월 26, 2026

As a Seoul local who has seen this district transform over the decades, I’ve curated a list of 7 essential stops in COEX that capture the true essence of Gangnam beyond the surface-level shopping.

I can still vividly recall the very first time I stepped foot into COEX. It was winter, right after I finished the Suneung (수능, the Korean national college entrance exam) the grueling national college entrance exam that every Korean student endures. Back then, I was deeply into with hip-hop, and the biggest icons in the Korean scene were Dynamic Duo (and incredibly, they are still legendary and active today!). They were holding a concert at COEX, and I remember taking a long-distance bus from the countryside with my friends, landing at the Express Bus Terminal, and heading straight to the venue with a heart full of excitement.

COEX also happens to be the setting of my very first date as an adult. A childhood friend who had moved to Seoul during high school reached out to me when we turned twenty. We agreed to meet for dinner, and the place he suggested was a restaurant inside COEX Mall. I remember walking through the vast, shimmering corridors, feeling a sense of wonder at how modern and immense it all was.

Since its opening, COEX has remained more than just a shopping center; it is a living landmark of Seoul, where trendy beauty, fashion, culture, and immersive experiences coexist. While newer mega-malls like Lotte World Tower have since emerged, COEX remains the “eternal classic” of Seoul’s urban culture.

However, because it is such a massive labyrinth of hundreds of shops and winding paths, wandering aimlessly can cause you to miss out on its true gems. Don’t waste your precious time getting lost in the maze. Having lived in Seoul for over 20 years and witnessed the evolution of Gangnam firsthand, I have curated 7 Essential Stops through the lens of The Gangnam Edit to satisfy your unique tastes.

From the thrill of shopping and moments of urban meditation to entertainment perfect for families and couples and the most Instagrammable photo spots, I’m about to reveal the local’s guide to the heart of COEX.

What is COEX?

COEX (코엑스) is a convention and exhibition center located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea. COEX is a portmanteau of ‘COvention’ and ‘EXhibition’.

COEX is serviced by Samseong station on line 2 and Bongeunsa station on line 9 of the Seoul Subway. The 836-meter (914-yard) section of sidewalk along Yeongdong Boulevard from exit No. 5 of Samseong station on to exit No. 7 of Bongeunsa Station is designated as a smoke-free zone by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

What is Starfield COEX Mall?

Starfield COEX Mall, operated by Shinsegae Property, is a premier shopping and multi-cultural complex located across the B1 and B2 levels of the COEX convention center.

The B1 level serves as the mall’s vibrant core, housing the highest concentration of retail stores, trend-setting cafes, and diverse dining options. It is home to major anchor facilities including Megabox COEX (a world-class cinema), SEALIFE COEX Aquarium, Youngpoong Bookstore, and the world-renowned Starfield Library.

One of the mall’s greatest strengths is its exceptional accessibility. It is directly connected to Samseong Station (Line 2) and Bongeunsa Station (Line 9), making it a breeze to reach from any part of Seoul. Additionally, it seamlessly links to other underground landmarks, such as Parnas Mall and the City Airport Terminal, allowing for an uninterrupted and expansive urban exploration experience.

1. Starfield Library (별마당 도서관)

The Iconic Visual Center of Gangnam

Starfield Library in COEX Seoul

Starfield Library serves as the iconic symbol of COEX and the perfect starting point for your exploration of the mall. No visit to COEX is complete without stepping into the Starfield Library. This isn’t just a place to read; it’s a breathtaking architectural marvel that has become the undisputed visual center of Gangnam. With its towering 13-meter bookshelves and a constant stream of natural light filtering through the massive glass ceiling, it provides the perfect, awe-inspiring backdrop for your “Seoul moment.”

While the library is undeniably beautiful year-round, it truly comes alive with seasonal decorations that change throughout the year. The winter season, in particular, is an absolute masterpiece. During this time, the entire space is transformed into a winter wonderland, adorned with spectacular, shimmering lights that decorate the ceiling like a canopy of stars. If you visit during the holidays, you might even be treated to a captivating lighting show that illuminates the towering shelves in time with festive music.

I highly recommend taking a commemorative shot here, with the sparkling lights and the thousands of books filling the vast space as your background. For a unique perspective, find the internal elevator and take a ride up. Viewing the library from this dynamic, moving angle offers a completely different and stunning vista that many visitors miss.

While it is a public library, the vibe is more akin to a grand cultural lounge. It’s the perfect place to rest your feet, soak in the architecture, and perhaps people-watch for a while before heading to your next stop.

The photo below was taken last winter during the Christmas season. Isn’t it just breathtakingly beautiful?

2. Gangnam Style & G20 Summit Photo Zones

Where Modern History Meets Visual Art

Did you know that as of 2026, it has already been 14 years since “Gangnam Style” took the world by storm? This track remains the most monumental success in the history of Korean pop music and was the first K-pop hit to achieve truly global dominance. Even now, the moment that opening beat drops, I bet many people still instinctively bring their hands together to perform the signature “horse dance.”

As you walk along Yeongdong-daero from the Samseong Station (Line 2) entrance toward Bongeunsa Station (Line 7), you will encounter a massive golden sculpture of overlapping hands representing that iconic dance move. Unveiled in 2015 with an investment of approximately 380 million KRW, it has since become a permanent landmark. While some might see it as just a large bronze statue, it is the ultimate symbol of the district and a fun, essential photo op for anyone visiting COEX.

Right nearby, you’ll find the G20 Square, established in March 2011 to commemorate a historic milestone for Korea. COEX served as the main venue for the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit, the first premier international financial and economic forum held in Asia. This square also features a monument celebrating South Korea’s achievement of $1 trillion in trade volume.

The G20 Square is surprisingly spacious and features stones engraved with information about the participating nations. It’s not just a walk-through space; it’s a site filled with modern significance. When I visited, I saw many travelers taking impressive photos against the backdrop of these iconic monuments. It’s a great spot to capture the “dynamic” side of Seoul’s history.

3. SEALIFE COEX Aquarium

A Captivating Undersea Journey for Everyone

Opened in 2000, SEALIFE COEX Aquarium holds the title of the oldest operating aquarium in South Korea and the only one built in the 20th century. As of 2025, it houses an impressive collection of over 50,000 marine creatures from 650 different species. It is also famously known as the “largest shark habitat in Korea,” featuring majestic Sand Tiger Sharks alongside sea turtles and the giant Pirarucus.

What makes this place truly remarkable is how impeccably it is maintained; it’s hard to believe it was built 26 years ago. The aquarium is thoughtfully divided into various themed zones, each with diverse tank sizes and species, ensuring there is never a dull moment. In fact, you might find yourself so immersed that hours fly by in what feels like minutes.

The most distinctive feature of the COEX Aquarium, however, is its Korean cultural integration. There is a dedicated section for native Korean fish, but the real highlight is the “Korean Garden” theme zone. Designed to resemble a royal palace garden from the Joseon Dynasty, this area allows you to admire colorful carp and indigenous species amidst traditional Korean architecture, including replicas of old houses and agungi (traditional Korean kitchen furnaces).

For a more interactive experience, you can even purchase carp food from a nearby vending machine to feed the fish. If you are looking for a unique and educational experience in the heart of the city—whether you’re on a date or traveling with family—this aquarium is a stellar choice.

4. Olive Young Samseong (Parnas Mall Branch)

The Ultimate K-Beauty Flagship Experience

Do you remember my previous post, “Don’t Leave Seoul Without These: 10+ Olive Young Must-Buys”? Olive Young has undeniably become a pilgrimage site for anyone visiting Korea. With over 1,300 locations nationwide, you’ll see them on almost every corner. However, if you are looking for the absolute best—the most spacious, the most curated, and the most tourist-friendly—there is one specific branch you must visit.

A quick heads-up: don’t confuse this with the standard “COEX Mall” branch. You are looking for the Olive Young Parnas Mall Branch, located within Parnas Mall, which is seamlessly connected to COEX.

Spanning over 660 square meters (approx. 7,100 sq. ft.), this is one of the largest and most premium flagship stores I’ve ever encountered. What sets this branch apart isn’t just the sheer volume of products, but the experiential content. They offer a professional “Skin Scan” service, allowing you to analyze your skin type and receive personalized K-beauty recommendations on the spot.

The store is also incredibly “foreigner-friendly,” with streamlined tax-refund services and a layout that makes navigating the endless aisles of viral skincare a breeze. You can find it easily by taking Exit 5 of Samseong Station (Line 2) and heading into Parnas Mall. Since it’s directly linked to the main COEX complex, make sure to skip the smaller shops and head straight here for the full K-beauty curation.

Olive Young (Parnas Mall Branch)

  • Hours: Everyday 10:00 – 22:00
  • Location: Parnas Mall B1 (Connected to COEX and Samseong Station Exit 5)

5. Mu-wol Table (무월식탁)

A Refined Taste of Home-style Korean Soul Food

After a long session of shopping and exploring, there’s nothing more comforting than a proper Korean meal. Mu-wol Table is my top recommendation for those who want to experience “Hansik” (Korean food) that offers exceptional quality for its price. It’s that rare find where you don’t have to compromise on the standard of the food to get a reasonable check.

The charm of this place lies in its “Bansang” style—individual meal sets that come with a main dish, rice, soup, and a variety of seasonal side dishes (banchan). It’s perfect for solo travelers or those who prefer a clean, organized dining experience. The interior, with its warm wooden tones and soft lighting, offers a cozy escape from the mall’s hectic hustle and bustle.

If you want to experience a quick yet neatly presented Korean meal during your shopping spree, this is the place to be.

Just a quick reminder: much like the Olive Young branch I mentioned earlier, Mu-wol Table is also located in Parnas Mall, which is directly connected to the main COEX complex.

  • Hours: Everyday 11:00 – 22:00
  • Location: Starfield COEX Mall, B1 (Near the Parnas Mall entrance)

6. Gabaedo (가배도)

A Serene Oasis of Coffee and Aesthetics

To round off your COEX journey, head to Gabaedo. In a mall dominated by futuristic screens and glass, Gabaedo stands out with its nostalgic, “Kyung-seong” era-inspired aesthetic—a beautiful blend of early 20th-century Korean and Western styles.

This cafe is a sanctuary for those who appreciate a slower pace. The name “Gabae” is an archaic Korean term for coffee, reflecting its dedication to the essence of the brew. Known for its rich Tiramisu and smooth Flat Whites, Gabaedo provides a serene atmosphere with its signature wooden shutters and minimalist oriental decor. It’s the ultimate spot to sit back, review your photos from the Starfield Library, and soak in the sophisticated calm of Gangnam.

I particularly loved their Matcha Tiramisu. The delicate balance of sweet cream and the pleasantly bitter notes of high-quality matcha is simply sublime. I highly recommend pairing this bittersweet Matcha Tiramisu with a hot Americano; the clean finish of the coffee elevates the earthy flavors of the green tea, creating a perfect afternoon harmony.

  • Location: Starfield COEX Mall, 1F (Gate 1 area)

7. Bongeunsa Temple

A Serene Sanctuary in the Heart of the Concrete Jungle

To conclude your COEX journey, I highly recommend stepping outside for a brief, 10-minute walk to Bongeunsa Temple. While it isn’t located inside the mall itself, its proximity makes it an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience the soul of Seoul.

The name “Bongeunsa” translates to “Honoring the Grace.” Originally established to pray for the well-being of the royal family, the temple has been remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. Today, it stands as a rare and precious historical gem—an ancient Buddhist temple thriving amidst the skyscrapers of Gangnam, the most vibrant district in Korea.

What is truly magical about Bongeunsa is the immediate silence that greets you the moment you step onto its grounds. One minute you are in the hectic energy of the city, and the next, you are surrounded by a peaceful forest. Its cultural significance is so renowned that it was a key stop for world leaders and first ladies during the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit.

If you have the time, I suggest visiting during sunset or early evening. The sight of the temple lanterns glowing against the backdrop of the darkening city sky is incredibly romantic. If your legs aren’t too tired, end your day here, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere just a step away from the urban chaos.

  • Location: 531 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul (Across from COEX/Bongeunsa Station Exit 1)
