It seems like the Korean Jjimjilbang has officially become a global keyword representing K-culture. Many of my international friends, having experienced these saunas vicariously through movies and K-dramas, often look for a comprehensive Korean Jjimjilbang guide as a “must-visit” resource when they come to Korea.
Recently, while watching the Netflix series <XO, Kitty>, it was so fun to see the Jjimjilbang featured as the setting for Kitty’s birthday. Seeing it as a backdrop for such a pivotal scene made me realize that the Korean sauna experience has truly become an icon of the K-lifestyle.
For those of us living the fast-paced Seoul life, there is one place where we go to hit the “reset” button: the Jjimjilbang. While some might think of it as just a public bathhouse, for us, it’s a cultural sanctuary. If you’re looking for the most sophisticated way to experience this tradition, especially if you need a premium Gangnam spa recommendation, this guide is for you.
Personally, I am a huge fan of these wellness spaces. In today’s post, I’ll be diving into the unique culture of Korean saunas, sharing my professional tips, and finally, revealing my favorite hidden Gangnam Jjimjilbang and sauna located right here in the heart of the city!
1. The Heart of the Experience: The “Seshin” (Body Scrub) Ritual
To truly understand the Korean sauna, you must experience the Seshin.
What exactly is Seshin?
Have you ever heard the term “Seshin”? It is a Sino-Korean word meaning “cleansing the body.” It refers to a unique Korean bathing culture where you receive a professional body scrub and massage at a public bathhouse or sauna. Most saunas have resident “Seshin-sa” (Master Scrubbers) who offer a variety of services, including basic scrubs, moisturizing milk treatments, full-body or scalp massages, facial care, and shampooing.
The Ritual of “Ddae”(때) and the “Italy Towel” Magic
The core of this culture revolves around the ritual of removing “Ddae”—which essentially refers to accumulated dead skin cells.
- The Prep: You begin by soaking in a warm tub for about 20 minutes. This softens the skin, making it perfectly ready for exfoliation.
- The Secret Tool for Seshin: Then comes the “Italy Towel.” Don’t be fooled by its simple appearance or misleading name; this small, textured green mitt is a Korean household staple designed to exfoliate every dead cell from your body with rhythmic precision.
The Experience: Public vs. Private
Traditionally, Seshin takes place in a dedicated corner of the public bathhouse with 2–3 open beds. While it’s an authentic communal experience, it doesn’t offer much privacy.
For those who prefer a more exclusive atmosphere, Private Seshin Shops (1-person spas) have become a huge trend. These boutiques offer independent dressing rooms and private baths, allowing you to enjoy the ritual away from the eyes of others—a perfect fit for the “Gangnam” lifestyle.
Courses & Pricing (As of April 2026)
- Price: For a private 1-person Seshin shop, a basic course (approx. 50–60 mins) typically ranges from ₩48,000 to ₩55,000.
- What’s Included: Most basic courses include the scrub, a moisturizing milk treatment, a light acupressure massage, a facial cleanse and shampooing. Prices vary depending on the duration and additional services like deep-tissue massage or hair treatments.
TGE’s Tip:
If you have sensitive skin or any injuries, be sure to let the scrubber know in advance. While many swear by the “invigorating reset,” some argue that intense scrubbing can be irritating for very delicate skin types.
2. Tips on How to Master the Jjimjilbang Like a Pro
Now that your skin is glowing from the Seshin, it’s time to explore the Jjimjilbang floors.
- The “Fire and Ice” Routine: Move between the high-heat Hwangto (Red Clay) room or Salt room and the Ice Room. This contrast therapy tightens your pores and boosts circulation.
- Hwangto (Red Clay) Room: Known as “living earth,” Hwangto emits high levels of far-infrared radiation when heated.
- Benefits of Hwangto: It penetrates deep into your muscles, promoting intensive detoxification and boosting metabolism. It’s particularly famous for its anti-aging properties and its ability to soothe chronic aches and improve skin texture by drawing out impurities.
- Salt (Himalayan/Sea Salt) Room: These rooms are lined with natural salt blocks that release negative ions.
- Benefits of Salt: Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory. Breathing in the salt-infused air helps clear the respiratory system, while the heat helps the body absorb minerals. It’s the go-to room for relieving stress and calming skin irritations like allergies or eczema.
- The Ice: The Polar Recovery Room : After 15–20 minutes of intense heat, heading straight to the Ice Room is essential. The Ice Room acts as the “reset button” for your body.
- Benefits of Ice: The sudden cold causes your dilated pores to instantly tighten, locking in the minerals absorbed during the heat session. More importantly, it stimulates blood circulation and reduces inflammation, much like an elite athlete’s ice bath. This cycle of expanding and contracting blood vessels strengthens the immune system and leaves your skin looking incredibly firm and radiant.
- Hwangto (Red Clay) Room: Known as “living earth,” Hwangto emits high levels of far-infrared radiation when heated.
- The Iconic Snack: Head to the snack bar for the “Jjimjilbang Set”: Sikhye (sweet rice drink) and Roasted Eggs. It’s a place where you can indulge in nostalgic snacks, play games, dive into a book, or simply enjoy a deep, guilt-free nap. I believe this is exactly why my kids are in love with this place!
- The “Sheep Head” Towel: Folding your towel into two knots to wear like a hat is the unofficial dress code. It protects your hair from the heat and is essential for your photos.

3. My Favorite “Hidden Gem” in Gangnam: Club K Seoul
There are many saunas in Seoul, but for The Gangnam Edit, I’ve chosen a place that redefines the experience: Club K Seoul.
Located near Seolleung Station, Club K Seoul is not your average neighborhood sauna. It’s a “Culture Complex” that blends a traditional spa with high-end aesthetics.

Why I Recommend It:
- The Library & Gallery Vibe: Unlike traditional saunas that can feel a bit dated, Club K features a massive library cafe and an art gallery. You can lounge among thousands of books or enjoy trendy pop music while cooling down.
- Sophisticated Interiors: The minimalist and moody lighting makes it feel like a luxury lounge. It’s the perfect place for those who want the Jjimjilbang experience without sacrificing style.
- The Perfect Location: It’s tucked away in the business district of Gangnam, making it a convenient escape after a day of shopping in Samsung-dong or a busy meeting.

How to Use Club K Seoul:
- Check-in & Shoes: When you enter, locate the shoe lockers opposite the main counter. Store your shoes inside, lock it, and keep the key with you.
- Payment & Gear: Take your shoe locker key to the front desk. Once you’ve made your payment, the staff will provide you with a Jjimjilbang uniform, towels, and a separate electronic locker key for the changing room.
- The Locker Room: Head to the sauna area (divided by gender). Find the locker that matches your key number to store your belongings.
- Choose Your Path:
- Option A: If you want to dive straight into the water, head into the sauna for a relaxing bath or a Seshin session.
- Option B: If you’re ready for the “Fun” part, change into your Jjimjilbang uniform and head to the main lounge area to enjoy the library, cafe, and heated rooms!

TGE’s Tip:
Since you’ll be sweating again in the heated rooms anyway, I recommend taking a quick shower or just a facial cleanse before heading to the Jjimjilbang area—or even going straight there! You can save the deep soak and full bath for the very end to freshen up perfectly.
TGE’s 6 Steps to Enjoy a Korean Jjimjilbang, Club K Seoul:
- Start with a quick shower for body and clean your face including removing your makeup.
- Wear the Jjimjilbang uniform. After that, go to the Jjimjilbang area and spend 20 minutes in the Salt Room or Hwangto (Red Clay) Room
- Go to the Ice room right after the Salt or Hwangto Room for a contrast therapy to boost body circulation.
- Head to the Library Cafe at Club K for a chilled Sikhye and a few chapters of a book. Enjoy your books, snacks or whatever your fee time as much as you want!
- Repeat the number 2 and 3 until you feel it’s enough.
- Go back to the sauna. Take off your clothes and enjoy the bath.
The Jjimjilbang is where the modern hustle of Seoul meets ancient relaxation rituals. Whether you’re here for the detoxing heat, the skin-transforming Seshin, or just a quiet place to read and snack, it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.
Next time you’re in Seoul, don’t just walk past those spa signs—descend into the sanctuary of Club K Seoul and hit that “reset” button.
